Missouri Compromise - drew a line between free and slave states and required a balance between slaves and free states
Compromise of 1850 - established California as a free state, made slave trade illegal in Washington D.C. and created a strict fugitive slave law
Henry Clay - "the Great Compromiser" helped pass the Compromise of 1850 to keep the US out of war
Kansas-Nebraska Act - repealed Compromise of 1850 allowing new states to decide whether to be free or slave
Bleeding Kansas - nickname for the territory after fighting broke out between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces
Abolitionists - nickname given those like Frederick Douglas, and William Lloyd Garrison who fought to get rid of slavery
Uncle Tom's Cabin - best selling book by Harriet Beecher Stowe that exposed many Americans to the evils of slavery
Dred Scott v. Sanford - US Supreme Court case of a slave who sued for his freedom after traveling to "free states." Court ruled that he was property and not a citizen so couldn't sue.
